THE MASLY LAB

Evolution, Genetics, and Development

J.P. Masly, Associate Professor and Associate Director for the School of Biological Sciences

J.P. received a B.S. in Biology from the Pennsylvania State University and spent a year at the University of Crete in Greece as a J. William Fulbright Scholar before receiving his M.S. and Ph.D. in Evolutionary Genetics at the University of Rochester. He was a NIH-NRSA Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Southern California and joined the faculty at the University of Oklahoma in 2010.

Lab members

Masly Lab, Spring 2023

Mehrnaz Afkhami, Ph.D. student

Mehrnaz received a B.S. in Animal Biology and M.S. in Animal Biosystematics from University of Tehran before joining the lab in 2017. She is interested in the impact of male genital variation on evolution of female genitalia.

Md Golam Azom, Ph.D. student

Azom received a B.Sc in Fisheries Science from the Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science and Technology University, and M.S in Fisheries Biology and Genetics from the Bangladesh Agricultural University where he received the  President’s Gold Medal. Azom joined the lab in Fall 2021 to study the genetic and developmental bases of phenotypic diversity among reproductive traits.

Harriet Lumula, Ph.D. student

Harriet received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from Missouri University of Science and Technology  before joining the lab in 2022. Her research interests include evolutionary genetics, reproductive biology, and germline development.

Subah Chowdhury, Undergraduate researcher

Subah is a third-year double-major in Biochemical Sciences and Social Work. She is interested in understanding how variation in Drosophila male genital morphology affects female reproductive behaviors and physiology.

Conley Holloway, Undergraduate researcher

Conley is a fourth-year Biology major interested in understanding how genetic variation directs developmental variation in male genital morphology.

Ashley Bentz, Undergraduate researcher

Ashley is a third-year Biology major interested in studying the function of novel genes, and how sequence variation affects gene function.

Will Northcutt, Undergraduate researcher

Will is a fourth-year Biology major interested in understanding how genetic variation directs developmental variation in male genital morphology.

Ivy Broughton, Undergraduate researcher

Ivy is a third-year Biology major with an emphasis on genetic and developmental biology. Her research interests include functional characterization of novel genes, and how sequence variation affects gene function.
